Samuel Nathaniel Behrman, a renowned playwright, screenwriter, essayist, raconteur, and wit, was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to a devout Jewish grocer. He grew up in impoverished circumstances but attended Clark College and later Harvard University, where he studied drama and English.
