Rose Arianna McGowan is an American actress and director, renowned for her significant contributions to the independent film industry. Born on September 5, 1973, in Florence, Tuscany, Italy, to American parents Terri and Daniel Patrick McGowan, Rose is the second eldest of six siblings, with ancestry tracing back to Ireland, France, and England.
As a young child, Rose was raised within the Italian chapter of the Children of God, a community her family was a part of until the early 1980s, when they severed ties and migrated to Eugene, Oregon, USA. Following her parents' divorce, Rose relocated to Gig Harbor, Washington, to live with her grandmother. At the age of 14, she was accused of drug use by a family friend and was committed to rehabilitation, a decision she has consistently maintained was unjustified.
Upon her release, Rose spent a year without a home and was emancipated from her parents by the age of 15. She began her acting career with The Doom Generation (1995),a role that was originally intended for Jordan Ladd but was awarded to McGowan coincidentally by an associate of director Gregg Araki. For her performance, she was nominated at the 1995 Independent Spirit Awards for Best Debut Performance.
Rose's subsequent success in Wes Craven's Scream (1996) made her a household name, and she went on to appear in a string of films, including Going All the Way (1997),Lewis & Clark & George (1997),Southie (1998),and Jawbreaker (1999). Her high-profile relationship with musician Brian Warner, also known as Marilyn Manson, overshadowed her career during much of the 1990s.
After the relationship ended in 2001, Rose continued to work steadily, appearing in a range of films, including The Killing Yard (2001),Roads to Riches (2002),and Stealing Bess (2003). She was also introduced to the mainstream as Paige Matthews in the popular television series Charmed (1998),a role she played for five consecutive years.
Rose's directorial debut, Dawn (2014),was nominated for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. She has expressed a general apathy and disdain for Hollywood, despite her strong work ethic, and has resolved to pursue further projects as a director following her marriage to LA-based artist Davey Detail.
