Robert's life was surrounded by art and images from a young age, as his father was an artist. As a junior in high school, he took night courses in advanced photography. During this time, he also became the Canadian Cycling Champion and a Canada Games Gold medalist, but he left a promising sporting career to focus solely on film.
Robert's academic background includes studying Fine Art at the University of British Columbia and Film and Communications at Simon Fraser University. After leaving college, he founded OmniFilm Productions in Vancouver in 1979, where he produced, directed, and photographed numerous international documentaries, including award-winning environmental and conservation films for Greenpeace and other clients.
In addition to his documentary work, Robert produced, directed, and photographed over 350 TV commercials between 1980 and 1990. Prior to focusing exclusively on dramatic cinematography, he worked on a wide range of projects, demonstrating his versatility as a cinematographer.
Throughout his career, Robert has won numerous awards and accumulated hundreds of credits, including work on big-budget films like The Golden Compass and Dragonball Evolution. His technical and artistic mastery, combined with his collaborative nature, have earned him the reputation as "a director's dream" among his former collaborators.
Robert has been a member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) since 1985 and was honored with membership in the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in 2002.
