Rick has been performing all his life, starting with acting out a story in the third grade. He moved to California with his family when he was nine years old and began playing drums at 13. He was in all the bands in school and college, and even played percussion for the play "Brigadoon". He made his stage debut in "Charley's Aunt" and later appeared in "A Man for all Seasons" and "Ordinary People".
