Richard Crudo, ASC, is a renowned cinematographer and director with a distinguished career spanning decades in the film industry. He has made a significant impact with his work, showcasing his exceptional skills and versatility.
In his most recent projects, Crudo has directed the documentary "Ed Murphy: American Hero," which tells the inspiring story of a decorated World War II veteran who was part of the Naval Combat Demolition Unit, a precursor to the modern-day SEAL teams. He has also worked as a cinematographer on the upcoming CBS series "Tommy," capturing the Los Angeles segments of the show.
Crudo's career as a cinematographer began in the 1990s, and since then, he has lensed over thirty feature films, including the timeless classic "American Pie" and other notable movies such as "American Buffalo," "Outside Providence," "Down to Earth," "Federal Hill," "Out Cold," "Grind," and "Brooklyn Rules."
In addition to his work in feature films, Crudo has also photographed commercials and episodic television series for various networks, including FX Network's "Justified," CW's "Jane the Virgin," MTV's "Awkward," Amazon's "Good Girls Revolt," and CBS's "NCIS" and "SWAT."
Crudo's achievements extend beyond his work as a cinematographer. In 2011, he became the first cinematographer to test Canon's new motion picture camera, the EOS C300, and he wrote, directed, and photographed the contemporary crime feature "Dirty People." As a result, Canon asked him to join their elite Explorer of Light family of Canon professionals.
Crudo has also directed other notable projects, including Sony's post-apocalyptic horror thriller "Against The Dark." Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and currently based in Los Angeles, Crudo has served six terms as president of the American Society of Cinematographers and three years as a Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
He is a frequent lecturer at universities across the United States and contributes to American Cinematographer magazine and other industry publications. Crudo is also a leading advocate for establishing standards for digital imaging workflow and has been involved in various professional organizations, including the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, the National Film Preservation Board for the Library of Congress, the International Cinematographers Guild, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
