Renée Cosima, a captivating figure on the French screen, defied expectations by embodying a unique blend of innocence, guile, wickedness, and mystery in films such as 'Les enfants terribles', 'Au royaume des cieux', and 'Les naufrageurs'. With her exceptional qualities, she could have become a prominent name in the industry, but for some unexplained reason, her career stagnated.
A former student of the Opéra de Paris Ballet, Renée was forced to abandon her dancing career due to health issues. She married a South American diplomat at a young age and spent several years abroad before returning to France in 1947. Upon her return, she developed a passion for theatre, which coincided with her discovery by the cinema. She soon landed memorable roles in notable films by Cocteau, Melville, and Duvivier, while also performing in plays by renowned playwrights such as George Bernard Shaw and Federico Garcia Lorca.
Notably, Renée played the role of artist Suzanne Valadon alongside famous painter Maurice Utrillo in a short film directed by Pierre Gaspard-Huit. However, from the beginning of the 1950s, her career began to decline. She secured fewer roles in more commercial films and appeared in fewer plays. This downturn may have been attributed to her marriage to Guenaël Bolloré, an influential industrialist, whom she wed in 1957. After her wedding, Renée gradually distanced herself from the limelight, eventually passing away at the age of 58, leaving a modest mark on film history.
