Biography

Rebecca Cremona, a Maltese film director, has made significant contributions to the industry. She is the director and co-writer of Simshar, a groundbreaking film that has made history by being the first Maltese film to be submitted for the prestigious Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Cremona's academic background is impressive, having obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Comparative Literature from the University of Warwick and a Master of Arts degree in Broadcast Cinema from the Art Center College of Design. She also furthered her education by studying at the renowned American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Early in her career, Cremona worked on several films shot in Malta, including notable productions such as Munich and Agora. Her talent and dedication were recognized when she directed the short film Magdalene in 2009, which went on to win a Student EMMY and a Directors Guild of America award.

In 2014, Cremona directed Simshar, a film that tells the gripping story of the Simshar incident, in which four people tragically lost their lives in an explosion on a shipping vessel off the coast of Malta. This film is widely regarded as the first ever Maltese international feature film and was submitted for consideration for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, making it a historic milestone for Maltese cinema.
