Raymond Depardon, a multifaceted individual, wears multiple hats as a photographer, journalist, and filmmaker. Born in 1942 in Burgundy to a family of farmers, Depardon's early life was marked by a connection to the land and a sense of simplicity. However, in 1958, he made the bold decision to leave his rural roots behind and move to Paris, driven by a passion to become a photographer.
His journey began with a humble start as a messenger in a photography agency. His first assignment was to capture the opening night of a cinema, which just so happened to be the premiere of Jean-Luc Godard's iconic film, Breathless. This early experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
In 1966, Depardon co-founded the agency Gamma with three fellow reporters, not for financial gain, but for the sake of creative freedom. He also spearheaded the establishment of a cinema department, acquiring an Eclair camera and experimenting with making news films for television, in addition to taking news photographs. This period was instrumental in his development as a filmmaker.
When Depardon directs his lens at people, he remains silent, allowing his subjects to unfold before the camera without interruption. It is often mistakenly believed that he shields himself from the harsh realities of the world, but the truth is that he is acutely aware of the world's miseries.
