Rao's involvement in the civil rights movement in India, where he sat on a hunger strike until death at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, was a testament to his unwavering commitment to social justice for Dalits in India. His hunger strike led to his expulsion from the university, and he eventually settled in America, where he continued to fight for self-determination for Native Americans (Iroquois, Senecas) in Up State New York.
