Peter Webber, a self-proclaimed cinephile, kicked off his career with the short film "The Zebra Man" shortly after graduating from film school. He then ventured into film editing, collaborating with producers Andy Paterson and Anand Tucker on Tucker's drama debut, "Saint-Ex", starring Miranda Richardson and Bruno Ganz.
As a documentary director, Webber explored a diverse range of subjects, including the life of Wagner, crash test dummies, and the creatures of the deep oceans. His documentary series "The Curse of the Phantom Limb" further showcased his versatility.
Webber's transition into drama saw him direct Simon Russell Beale as Schubert and delve into the counter-culture of tunnel-dwelling road protesters in "Underground". He then created controversy with the Channel Four mini-series "Men Only", which chronicled the downfall of a five-a-side soccer team's members from respectable to criminal and debauched.
In a different direction, Webber's drama "The Stretford Wives" for the BBC starred Fay Ripley in a tale of women's revenge against men.
However, it was his feature film debut, "Girl with a Pearl Earring", starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth, that truly marked a significant milestone in his career. The film received widespread acclaim, earning three Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, and ten BAFTA Award nominations, among many others.
Following this success, Webber was approached by Dino de Laurentis to direct "Young Hannibal: Behind the Mask", a prequel based on Thomas Harris' upcoming book of the same name. The film, starring Gaspard Ulliel, Li Gong, Rhys Ifans, and Anthony Hopkins (voice),chronicles a young Hannibal Lecter's life across three phases, from his childhood in Lithuania during World War II to his time in France and America before his capture by FBI agent Will Graham in "Red Dragon". The movie is currently in production in Prague.
