Peter Revson was the quintessential embodiment of the young, affluent, and globe-trotting playboy race car driver, yet ironically, this persona was one he detested. Born in New York City to a family that founded the renowned Revlon Cosmetics empire, Revson's life was marked by privilege and excess.
He began his racing career in the 1960s in Hawaii, competing in local events, before transitioning to Europe and attempting to conquer the prestigious Formula 1 series. Although his early results were modest, Revson returned to the United States and continued to excel in USAC, Can-Am, and Sportscar events, eventually returning to Europe and securing a second stint in Formula 1.
This time, Revson's efforts were more fruitful, as he was handpicked to drive for the esteemed McLaren team. He claimed two victories, but more notably, earned the respect and admiration of the racing community for his exceptional skills.
In 1974, Revson joined the Shadow team, and his prospects seemed brighter than ever, with him being one of the top contenders for the World Championship. Moreover, he was engaged to former Miss World Marjorie Wallace, further solidifying his status as a racing sensation.
Tragically, Revson's life was cut short during testing for the South African Grand Prix, when his Shadow struck the barriers and exploded. The racing world mourned the loss of one of its most promising drivers, and America was left to wonder what could have been.
