Per Fly's journey in the film industry began when he was accepted into the Danish Film School in 1989. He completed his education in 1993 with the graduation film Room 17, marking the start of his professional career.
During the following years, Per Fly directed several short films, including Sofaholdet (1994),Calling Katherine (1994),and The Little Knight (1997). He also directed three episodes of the television show TAXI for Danish Radio in 1998.
Per Fly's breakthrough came in 2000 with the release of his debut feature film, The Bench, which earned him a Bodil and a Robert award for Best Director. The film was also awarded the Audience Award and the Best Director award at the Nordische FilmDays 2000 in Lübeck.
The Bench was the first installment in Per Fly's trilogy about the lower, middle, and upper class in Denmark. The sequel, Inheritance (2003),focused on the Danish upper class and became the most attended film in Danish cinemas that year. It won a total of seven Robert awards in 2004, including Best Film, Best Director, and the Audience Award.
Inheritance also received international recognition, earning the award for best screenplay at the Flaiano International Film Festival in Italy and the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain.
Per Fly's third film in the trilogy, Manslaughter (2005),earned him the award for Best Director at the Robert Awards and a Bodil for Best Film. The trilogy as a whole was recognized with the Nordic Council Film Prize.
In 2005, Per Fly was awarded the Crown Prince and Crown Princess' Culture Prize for his trilogy. The Crown Prince praised the films, stating, "The trilogy is some of the most powerful films in Danish film history."
In 2007, Per Fly created the TV series Performances, consisting of six episodes, for the TV network DR. The series starred Sonja Richter, who won the award for Best Actress at the 47th Monte Carlo TV Festival.
Per Fly's latest film, The Woman who Dreamed of a Man, was released in January 2010.
