Biography

Paul Burke was born on July 21, 1926, in New Orleans to Martin Burke, a prizefighter and promoter, and his wife. He was educated at prep schools and later moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. Burke's early work included bit parts in films such as "Call Me Mister" (1951),"Fearless Fagan" (1952),and "The Disembodied" (1957).

Burke's breakthrough role came when he was cast as Detective Adam Flint in the TV series "Naked City" (1958). He played the role for three seasons, earning two Emmy nominations and becoming a household name. He also appeared in other TV series, including "Highway Patrol," "The Lineup," "M Squad," and "Dragnet."

In the 1960s, Burke starred in several TV series, including "Noah's Ark," "Harbourmaster," and "Five Fingers." He also appeared in the film "Della" (1965),which was a failed pilot for a prospective TV series. In the 1970s, Burke continued to work in TV, appearing in shows such as "The Rookies," "The New Perry Mason," and "Police Woman."

Burke's later career was marked by a decline in his film work and a focus on TV guest roles. He appeared in shows such as "Hot Shots," "Dynasty," and "Santa Barbara." In 1989, Burke was tried on federal racketeering charges, aiding and abetting a gambling operation, and committing perjury before a grand jury. He was acquitted, but the damage to his career was done.

Burke married actress Lyn Peters in 1979 and retired to Palm Springs, where he died in September 2009 at the age of 83 from leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
