Biography

Owen Wister, a distinguished American writer and historian, is renowned for his notable literary works, particularly "The Virginian" and a biography of Ulysses S. Grant. In 1898, Wister tied the knot with his cousin, Mary Channing, and the couple went on to have six children together.

Tragedy struck when Mary Channing passed away during childbirth in 1913, leaving Wister to raise their six children as a single parent. Their daughter, Marina Wister, would later marry artist Andrew Dasburg in 1933.

Throughout his illustrious career, Wister penned numerous novels, including "The New Swiss Family Robinson" in 1882, "The Dragon of Wantley: His Tale" in 1892, "Lin McLean" in 1897, "The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains" in 1902, "Philosophy 4: A Story of Harvard University" in 1903, "A Journey in Search of Christmas" in 1904, "Lady Baltimore" in 1906, "Padre Ignacio: or, the Song of Temptation" in 1911, and "Romney: And Other New Works about Philadelphia" from 1912-1915.

In addition to his novels, Wister also authored a range of non-fiction works, such as "Ulysses S. Grant" in 1901, "Oliver Wendell Holmes, in the 'American Men of Letters Series'" in 1902, "The Bison, Musk-Ox, Sheep, and Goat Family, with G. B. Grinnell and Caspar Whitney in the 'American Sportsman's Library'" in 1903, "Benjamin Franklin, in the 'English Men of Letters Series'" in 1904, "The Seven Ages of Washington: A Biography" in 1907, "The Pentecost of Calamity" in 1915, "The Aftermath of Battle: With the Red Cross in France" in 1916, "A Straight Deal: or the Ancient Grudge" in 1920, "Neighbors Henceforth" in 1922, "A Monograph of the Work of Mellor Meigs & Howe" in 1923, "Roosevelt: The Story of a Friendship, 1880-1919" in 1930, and "The Philadelphia Club, 1834-1934" in 1934.
