Biography

Octavio Getino, a renowned film collective founder, was born in the culturally rich city of Leon, Spain, and later relocated to Argentina in the early 1950s. It was during this period that he collaborated with acclaimed director Fernando Solanas to establish the groundbreaking and revolutionary film collective, Cinema Liberación, a pioneering entity that significantly impacted the film industry.

The collective's most notable achievement was the production of the influential film "The Hour of the Furnaces," which was predominantly shot underground and clandestinely, due to the repressive political climate of the time. This film, directed by Solanas and Getino, was a testament to their unwavering commitment to artistic expression and social change.

As the political landscape in Argentina shifted in the mid-1970s, with the return of Juan Perón as president, Getino found himself appointed as the Argentinian film censor. This position allowed him to relax the strict artistic regime that had previously stifled creative freedom. However, his tenure was short-lived, as he was soon replaced by a more repressive incumbent.

In an effort to evade extradition and continue his work, Getino relocated to Peru, where he took on the role of a film theory teacher. He remained in this position, resisting attempts to return him to Argentina, until the 1980s, when he made the move to Mexico.
