Nuno Gil is a Portuguese actor, performer, and theatre director residing in Lisbon, Portugal. He has pursued extensive training in performing arts and dance across Europe, the USA, and Japan. Over the course of his life, he has spent ten years researching theatre and film in prominent cities such as Madrid, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, New York, and Rio de Janeiro.
Nuno Gil's film debut occurred in 2014, when he portrayed Rui in "Two Drifters," directed by renowned and award-winning director João Pedro Rodrigues. This film earned the "Special Mention Cinema de Recherche" at the International Cannes Film Festival in 2005. He is fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French.
Nuno Gil's academic journey began in 1999 at the Lisbon National Theatre Conservatoire, where he completed his graduation. He also attended the School of Music and Performing Arts of Oporto (Esmae, 2001),Estudis the Teatre in Barcelona, and the Royal School of Dramatic Art in Madrid (Resad),finishing his degree in Physical Theatre in 2003.
In 2002, he received a fellowship from the Orient Foundation and Kyoto Arts Centre (KAC) to study Butoh Dance and Noh Theater in Kyoto, Japan. He was granted the opportunity to integrate the Shizuku Butoh Dance Company in Tokyo under the direction of Japanese dancer and choreographer Dakei. Additionally, he attended the Butoh dance studios of Kazuo Ohno and Akiko Fujimoto.
Nuno Gil has received several prestigious awards and scholarships throughout his career. In 2004, he won the Young Artists Award in Theatre, sponsored by the National Culture Centre of Portugal (CNC),to investigate the Suzuki method acting training at SCOT (Suzuki Company of Toga),under the guidance of its creator and artistic director Tadashi Suzuki. In 2008, he was awarded the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship to study and monitor the artwork of Anne Bogart's Siti Company, in order to investigate and develop the techniques View Points and the Suzuki Method. He also won a scholarship from GDA (Portuguese Actor's Guild) to study with Susan Batson in her Black Nexxus Studio in NYC.
As a theatre director, Nuno Gil has directed several notable productions, including "Parece uma Tonteria" at Teatro Valle Inclan in Madrid (2003),"After the Rehearsal" at The Tank in New York (2009),"Tragédia Brasileira" (Brazilian Tragedy) at Teatro Nelson Rodrigues in Rio de Janeiro (2010),and "Matei Por Amor" (I have Killed for Love) at Teatro Municipal São Luís in Lisbon (2016).
Throughout his career, Nuno Gil has collaborated with various theatre ensembles and companies in Portugal, including Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II, Teatro da Cornucópia, Teatro Aberto, Teatro Municipal São Luiz, Teatro Maria Matos, Teatro Praga, Teatro Taborda, Teatro Nacional São João, and Seiva Trupe Teatro.
In film, Nuno Gil has worked in Portugal and Brazil, with directors such as João Pedro Rodrigues, Paulo Rebelo, Joaquim Leitão, Caetano Gotardo, Aline Portugal, Antonio da Silva, Ernesto Solis, Patrícia Sequeira, and Cristèle Alves Meira.
