Nimco Sheikhaden is a renowned Bronx-based filmmaker, known for her thought-provoking and emotionally charged documentaries that tackle complex social issues. Her most recent project, Exodus, is a poignant documentary that follows the journey of two women as they return to their families and communities after decades of incarceration. Executive produced by Geeta Gandbhir, Blair Foster, and Rudy Valdez, Exodus is set to premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival.
In addition to Exodus, Nimco has produced a six-part documentary series for HBO that serves as a follow-up to the landmark series Eyes on the Prize. This series sheds light on the ongoing struggle for civil rights in America, and is set to air early in 2025. Nimco has also produced an additional HBO series, Black and Missing, which was executive produced by Soledad O'Brien and won numerous awards, including the Cinema Eye Honors Award for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Series, the NAACP Image Award, the Television Academy Honors Award, and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Series.
Nimco's work has also included directing and producing the Lincoln Center-commissioned short film, which profiles award-winning poet and artist Carl Hancock Rux. This film was part of an experiential, site-specific event celebrating the Juneteenth emancipation holiday. Throughout her career, Nimco has worked on a wide range of projects, from major platforms such as HBO, Netflix, Hulu, A&E, and Peacock, to smaller, more intimate productions.
Nimco has collaborated with some of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the industry, including Sam Pollard, Geeta Gandbhir, Blair Foster, and Alex Gibney. Her latest project, Mama Fela, is a short film that focuses on an unlikely hero in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood, who has dedicated his life to educating four generations of Black youth. Executive produced by Shaka King, Mama Fela is a powerful testament to the impact that one person can have on their community.
