Growing up in a low-income household, Rivera was forced to assume adult responsibilities at a tender age. As a minor, he took on illicit work in a local grocery store to contribute to his family's financial well-being. During his spare moments, he would often improvise in front of his workplace, an early indication of his burgeoning talent.
It was during this period that a music executive stumbled upon his remarkable skills, subsequently signing him to a recording contract. At the tender age of fourteen, Nicky Jam recorded his debut album, "...Distinto A Los Demás".
