Biography

Nanni Moretti, a multifaceted individual, was born on August 19, 1953, and has spent most of his life in Rome, where he has been deeply passionate about two distinct pursuits: cinema and water-polo.

From a young age, Moretti's dedication to these passions was evident, as he actively pursued them throughout his childhood. In fact, in 1970, he even played in Italy's first division water-polo league and represented the junior National team, showcasing his impressive athletic abilities.

In addition to his athletic endeavors, Moretti was also heavily involved in politics during his youth, serving within the Italian Communist Party's youth league. This early exposure to politics likely played a significant role in shaping his perspective and worldview.

After completing his high school studies, Moretti made a bold decision to sell his stamp collection and purchase a super8 cinema camera, marking the beginning of his journey as a filmmaker. In 1973, he started creating short films with his friends using this new equipment, laying the groundwork for his future career in cinema.

Moretti's professional film-making career officially commenced with the release of Ecce bombo in 1978, a film that would go on to achieve national success and become a cult classic among many Italians.
