Biography

Mikhail Pugovkin was a renowned Russian comedian, whose remarkable career spanned over six decades. Born Mikhail Ivanovich Pugon'kin on July 13, 1923, in the village of Rameshki, Kostroma province, Russia, Soviet Union, he moved to Moscow at the age of 13 with a dream of becoming an actor.

Initially, Pugovkin worked as a metal worker at a Moscow factory, but his passion for acting led him to join the Moscow Drama troupe under the direction of Fedor Kaverin in 1940. He made his film debut in Delo Artamonovykh (1941) directed by Grigoriy Roshal, before being drafted into the Red Army to fight against the Nazis during World War II.

Pugovkin's bravery and exceptional talent earned him several decorations, including the Medal of Courage, and he was wounded in a clandestine operation in 1942. Despite a serious injury, he declined amputation to preserve his acting career and spent several months recuperating before re-gaining his mobility.

After the war, Pugovkin applied to the Acting Studio of Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT) in 1943, impressing the authorities with his talent, and eventually graduating as an actor in 1947. He worked with various companies, including Lenkom and Mosfilm Studio, and played leading and supporting roles in over 100 film and television productions.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pugovkin collaborated with prominent directors such as Mikhail Romm, Mikhail Kalatozov, Vladimir Petrov, Aleksandr Ptushko, and Leonid Gaidai, among others. He was designated People's Actor of the USSR in 1988 and received numerous decorations from the Soviet and Russian authorities.

In his later years, Pugovkin resided in Yalta, Crimea, and later in Moscow, where he lived in an apartment provided by the Moscow Art Theatre. He passed away on July 25, 2008, at the age of 85, and was laid to rest in Vagankovskoe Cemetery, Moscow, Russia.
