Michel Serrault: A Legendary French Actor
Born on January 24, 1928, in Brunoy, France, Michel Serrault initially considered a career in the priesthood before realizing the vow of celibacy would be a significant obstacle. He instead pursued his passion for performing, studying drama in Paris and starting his career on the cabaret stage and as a singing apprentice with Robert Dhery's theater troupe.
Serrault made his film debut in 1954, appearing in Henri-Georges Clouzot's thriller Diabolique (1955) alongside Simone Signoret. He went on to develop a reputation as a versatile and talented performer, capable of playing both comedic and dramatic roles with ease.
One of Serrault's most iconic roles was that of Albin (aka Zaza) in the French gay farce La Cage aux Folles (1978),opposite Ugo Tognazzi as his partner/manager Renato. The duo's chemistry on screen made them one of the most beloved and enduring couples in cinematic history.
Throughout his career, Serrault received numerous awards for his performances, including three César Awards for Best Actor for La Cage aux Folles (1978),The Grilling (1981),and Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud (1995). He continued to work well into his later years, appearing in films such as L'entourloupe (1980),Dr. Petiot (1990),The Old Lady Who Walked in the Sea (1991),and The Girl from Paris (2001).
Serrault passed away on July 29, 2007, due to cancer, leaving behind his wife Juanita and actress/daughter Nathalie Serrault. Despite his passing, his legacy as a talented and beloved actor continues to be celebrated by fans around the world.
