Michael Greer was a multifaceted individual, exceling as both an actor and comedian. His most notable role was that of Queenie, the charismatic prison drag queen, in Sal Mineo's stage and film adaptations of "Fortune and Men's Eyes" (1971). This groundbreaking production tackled the controversial subject of sexuality in prison.
In addition to his work on "Fortune and Men's Eyes", Greer appeared in other notable films, including the 1960s cult classic "The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart" (1970),in which he played a friend of Don Johnson's. This film marked Don Johnson's big-screen debut. Greer's other credits include the B-Movie sex comedy "Summer School Teachers" (1975) and "The Gay Deceivers" (1969),a film that explores the theme of two men avoiding combat in Vietnam by pretending to be gay. He also made cameo appearances in the Steve Martin comedy "The Lonely Guy" (1984) and the Bette Midler vehicle "The Rose" (1979).
Beyond his work in film, Greer was renowned for his live comedy performances. One of his most memorable routines was a monologue, in which he portrayed the Mona Lisa, holding a giant gilded frame around himself.
Greer's talents extended beyond the stage and screen. He wrote supplemental material for Debbie Reynolds' Vegas act and was once called upon to dub Bette Davis' voice when she refused to loop over scenes.
Tragically, Greer's career was somewhat marred by the early "gaysploitation" film era. Despite his impressive performances, he found it challenging to secure consistent work, partly because no one had previously navigated this path.
Unfortunately, Greer is often overlooked in the context of gay cinema due to a climate of political correctness. However, his legacy is more accurately remembered by his friends, colleagues, and fans who had the pleasure of experiencing his live work firsthand, rather than by Hollywood.
