Meegwun was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and spent his early childhood years, from the tender age of two to thirteen, living in numerous First Nations communities scattered across Northern Ontario. During this period, he developed a deep connection with nature and the outdoors, as well as a strong affinity for his Ojibway cultural heritage. Hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities were an integral part of his daily life, and he also found solace in traditional Ojibway practices such as dancing, singing, and art. His love for the silver screen was another defining characteristic, as he would often recreate scenes from his favorite movies with his friends in the woods and by the river.
After leaving the First Nations communities, Meegwun completed his high school education in Kenora, Ontario, before being accepted into the prestigious acting conservatory at York University in 2005. During his time at York, he honed his craft and expanded his knowledge of the performing arts. Upon graduating, he went on to work in various capacities across North America, including stage, film, and television, often sharing the screen with Indigenous actors who had inspired him during his childhood.
Meegwun's breakthrough roles include Butterhead in APTN's "Mohawk Girls" and Daniel Aerov in Syfy's "Helix." Since then, he has continued to work tirelessly in writing, theatre, film, and television, while also sharing his passion for the arts with children in Northern British Columbia and Ontario through arts-based workshops. In addition to his acting pursuits, Meegwun is also an accomplished Okichitaw Indigenous Martial Artist, Personal Trainer, and Yoga instructor.
Meegwun's directorial debut consists of two feature-length documentaries, one focused on the decline of BC Salmon numbers and the other on Okichitaw Martial Arts. His first short film, "Sweet Dreams," is slated for release in 2018. Fans of Meegwun can catch him in the upcoming CBC series "Burden of Truth" as Officer Owen Beckbie, airing on January 10, 2018, at 8pm.
