British film editor Matthew Newman embarked on his career in the film industry as a production assistant on the critically acclaimed film Gangs of New York, where he had the opportunity to be mentored by the renowned Director of Photography, Michael Ballhaus.
Newman's early career was primarily focused on editing commercials, but a chance encounter with the acclaimed Danish Director Nicolas Winding Refn led him to cut his first feature film project, the biographical drama Bronson, starring the talented Tom Hardy.
Newman's collaboration with Refn continued with the epic warrior feature film Valhalla Rising, starring the accomplished Mads Mikkelsen. Following his relocation to Los Angeles, Newman worked on three consecutive Refn projects: the 2011 romantic action drama Drive, starring the charismatic Ryan Gosling; the 2013 crime thriller Only God Forgives; and the 2016 psychological horror film The Neon Demon.
Each of these films premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in consecutive years, with Drive earning Newman his first BAFTA nomination.
In addition to his work on feature films, Newman has also edited numerous international commercials, including campaigns for luxury brands such as Lincoln, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hugo Boss, in collaboration with acclaimed Director Darren Aronofsky.
Newman's recent projects include the 2018 action feature film Sicario: Day of the Soldado, directed by Stefano Sollima and starring Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, as well as the 2019 Amazon Studios series Too Old To Die Young, starring Miles Teller.
The editor divides his time between Berlin and Los Angeles, and has recently worked on the 2021 action thriller Without Remorse for Sollima and Paramount Pictures.
