Matthew Taylor is an American artist and technologist whose multifaceted creative pursuits span a diverse range of mediums, including film, sculpture, photography, written works, and performance. As an individual with a broad scope of interests, Taylor has grappled with the term "artist" throughout his life, given his involvement in various industries such as data analysis, documentary filmmaking, and city planning.
Despite being primarily associated with filmmaking, Taylor identifies as a sculptor, adhering to a broader definition of the term that encompasses his diverse creative endeavors. With a classical background in painting, drawing, art history, and theory, Taylor transitioned into filmmaking during the late 1990s, while still enrolled in art school.
Initially, Taylor's creative output consisted of short concept films, digital installations, music videos, and fashion films. He eventually shifted his focus to documentary filmmaking, a medium that allowed him to explore his passion for storytelling and visual narrative. Notably, Taylor directed "Marcel Duchamp: The Art of The Possible", a feature-length documentary that delves into the life and work of Marcel Duchamp, examining the critical underpinnings of art in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Throughout his career, Taylor has created over 150 short films, fashion works, ballet and dance pieces, showcasing his versatility and creative range. Recently, Taylor has returned to his fine arts roots, with a new series of sculpture works forthcoming.
