Biography

Marlen Khutsiev, a renowned Soviet and Russian film director, screenwriter, actor, and teacher, boasts an impressive array of accolades, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR (1986),the State Prize of the Russian Federation (1993),and Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.

Born in the city of Tbilisi, Khutsiev's educational background began at the 43rd Tbilisi Secondary School, where he laid the foundation for his future success. In 1952, he graduated from the directing faculty of VGIK, under the guidance of the esteemed Igor Savchenko. His early career saw him work as a director at the Odessa Film Studio (1953-1958),before moving on to the Studio of Gorkiy (1959) and eventually Mosfilm (1965).

Throughout his illustrious career, Khutsiev has not only directed numerous films but has also been involved in the writing process, either as an author or co-author of scripts. His talent extends beyond the realm of film, as he has also staged plays, including "The Case in Vichy" at the Sovremennik Theater in 1967 and 1986, and has acted in several films.

In addition to his work in the film industry, Khutsiev has held various leadership positions, including Art Director of the "Screen" Central Television from 1968-1971 and head of the workshop of directing art cinematography at VGIK from 1978. He has also served as professor and head of the department of directing a feature film at VGIK since 1987, as well as President of the Guild of Film Directors of Russia since 1989.

Khutsiev's life and career have been immortalized in the documentary film "My Contemporaries" by Vladislav Vinogradov, released in 1984. He has also held the position of President of the film festival "Window to Europe" from 1994-1995.

Tragically, Marlen Khutsiev's life came to a close on March 19, 2019, at the age of 94, while hospitalized at the Moscow Botkin Hospital's intensive care unit. Despite his passing, Khutsiev's legacy continues to inspire and influence the world of cinema.
