Mark Thomas Taylor is a multifaceted composer whose impressive portfolio includes music for film, television, and the concert stage. As a protégé of the renowned composer, percussionist, NEA Jazz Master, and MacArthur Fellow Max Roach, Mark's career has been significantly influenced by his mentor's guidance.
Before becoming a full-time composer, Mark had a successful career as a French Hornist, working with extraordinary composers such as Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, and Muhal Richard Abrams. His exceptional skills as a musician made him a highly sought-after collaborator.
Unfortunately, Mark's performing career was cut short due to Embouchure Dystonia, a condition that affected his ability to play the French Horn. As a result, composing became his primary focus. Since then, Mark has been dedicated to pursuing various projects.
Some of his notable projects include composing contemporary scores for silent films, such as Oscar Micheaux's Within Our Gates. He has also worked on a series of horror and comedy shorts for LA's Scrawny Strange Productions and created music for licensing to television through boutique agencies in NYC, LA, and the UK.
In addition, Mark has been commissioned to create chamber music, including "Room To Breathe" for the Oregon Wind Quintet. He has also collaborated on "Last Days of Coney Island," an animated film by acclaimed animator/director Ralph Bakshi, and "It's Not Like He's Never Been There Before," a multi-movement orchestral work commissioned by Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Foundation.
Throughout his career, Mark has demonstrated his versatility and creativity as a composer, consistently pushing the boundaries of his craft and exploring new possibilities.
