Margarete Schön, a renowned German actress, was born in 1895 in the historic city of Magdeburg, Germany. Her illustrious stage career began in 1912, marking the starting point of a long and distinguished journey in the world of performing arts. From 1915 to 1918, Schön was a valued member of the esteemed Deutschen Theater in Hannover, honing her craft and perfecting her art. Her subsequent move to Berlin's Staatstheater from 1918 to 1945 solidified her position as a respected and accomplished actress.
Schön's foray into the world of cinema began with a few notable roles in silent films. Her portrayal of Kriemhild in Fritz Lang's epic films, Die Nibelungen: Siegfried (1924) and Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge (1924),showcased her impressive acting abilities and cemented her status as a talented actress. However, with the advent of sound in films, Schön's roles gradually shifted from starring parts to supporting roles, often depicting strong, maternal figures.
Following World War II, Schön found herself under contract with the East German film company Defa from 1948 to 1950. This period marked a significant chapter in her career, as she continued to work in the film industry, albeit in a slightly different capacity. In the latter years of her life, Schön turned her attention to radio, where she excelled in her roles, narrating documentaries and performing in plays for children. Her remarkable career, spanning nearly a century, came to a close with her passing in Berlin in 1985.
