Marcus Smythe, a renowned actor of film, television, and theatre, passed away on August 20th at his home in La Crescenta, California, surrounded by his loving family. He was 70 years young at the time of his passing, and his life was cut short due to a three-year battle with brain cancer.
Marcus is survived by his devoted wife, Suzanne Goddard-Smythe, and their two sons, Harrison and Duncan. He is also survived by his brother, Casey, who resides in Tucson, Arizona, as well as his nieces and nephews in Kansas and Arizona. Marcus was preceded in death by his parents, Patricia (Schweitzer) and Paul Smythe, and his brother, Scott.
Throughout his illustrious career, Marcus was a beloved romantic lead in some of the most popular daytime-television serials of the 1970s and '80s. He brought to life iconic characters such as Gordon Middleton on "The Guiding Light," Dane Taylor on "Search for Tomorrow," and Peter Love on NBC's long-running and award-winning "Another World." In addition to his work in television, Marcus appeared alongside acting legends Henry Fonda, Myrna Loy, and Jessica Tandy in feature films. He also performed extensively in off-Broadway theatrical productions and national stage tours, earning him numerous accolades, including Drama Logue and LA Weekly Drama Awards.
Marcus was a proud member of SAG, AFTRA, and Actors Equity, and he received his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Otterbein University in 1972 and his Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1975. Following his college days, Marcus honed his craft at the Cleveland Playhouse before making the move to New York City.
In his personal life, Marcus was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America in La Crescenta, where he served as an assistant scout master, chaplain, and recruiter. He was also a devoted father who, along with his wife Suzanne, coached their sons to achieve the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout.
Marcus Smythe's passing leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a lifetime of memorable performances. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
