Malga Kubiak, a visionary born artist in 1950 in the vibrant city of Warsaw, Poland. Her artistic journey began with a three-year stint at the Art Academy, honing her skills in painting, before making the bold move to London in 1973. This marked the start of her international odyssey, as she soon found herself in Copenhagen's iconic Christiania district, where she immersed herself in the city's eclectic art scene.
In 1974, Kubiak took her talents to Sweden, where she enrolled in the prestigious Performance School under the guidance of the renowned Yoshio Nakajima. Her artistic horizons continued to expand as she attended ValandKonstSkola in 1975, followed by the Video School in 1983. This period of intense creative exploration laid the foundation for her future endeavors as an avant-garde filmmaker.
In 1984, Kubiak made the move to New York City, where she would spend the next 17 years crafting her unique brand of cinematic art. During this time, she sold her videos at Kim's Video, and her books at esteemed institutions such as Saint Mark's, Tower Books, City Lights, and Anthology Film Archives. Her work received critical acclaim, with a notable screening at Pink Pony in NYC in 1997.
Kubiak's prolific output has resulted in over 40 films, with many of her works available on Vimeo Pro under The Ego Trip Label. As a writer, she has published four books, and has also fronted the punk rock band MissMess. In 2015, she was honored with the Public Award at the Warsaw LGBT Film Festival for her films PPPasolini & PPPasolini Epilog.
Kubiak's latest project, Polar Bear, was released in 2015 and is a testament to her continued exploration of LGBT icons. Despite no longer residing in NYC, where she had an apartment in Brooklyn, her grandson still calls the city home. With a legacy that spans decades, Malga Kubiak remains a pioneering figure in the world of avant-garde cinema and beyond.
