Malcolm Arnold was born on October 21, 1921, in Northampton, England. He studied composition with Gordon Jacob and trumpet with Ernest Hall at the Royal College of Music. In 1941, he joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra, becoming the principal trumpet player by 1943.
