Nihonbashi, Tokyo, 1961, was the birthplace of Hattori Mako, a woman destined for a life of resilience and adaptability. Growing up with her single mother, she knew the importance of contributing to the household from a young age. At just fifteen, she began working to help her mother, who was struggling to make ends meet as a hostess. This early introduction to the workforce instilled in her a strong sense of responsibility and determination.
To supplement her family's income, Hattori Mako turned to dance lessons, which would ultimately become a defining feature of her life. Her instructor introduced her to the world of modeling, and she made her debut in 1978 as a campaign girl for Kanebo cosmetics. This marked the beginning of a successful career in television, with appearances in various shows and a cooking program.
However, Hattori Mako's journey was not without its challenges. She retired from the Japanese entertainment industry and relocated to the United States in 1982, where she spent the next decade, residing in New York between 1984 and 1994. During this time, she honed her language skills, becoming proficient in English and even studying translation, a skill that would serve her well in her future endeavors.
Her linguistic abilities were put to the test when she appeared as a translator on a mock episode of David Letterman's US TV show in 1985. She also speaks Spanish, a testament to her dedication to learning and adapting to new environments.
In 1987, Hattori Mako married Edward Valentine and welcomed a daughter, Emma, in 1991. After a brief hiatus from the entertainment industry, she returned to Japan in the 1990s and began working on a variety show for a local Sendai TV station in the 2000s.
Throughout her life, Hattori Mako has been drawn to traditional Japanese dance, mastering various styles and even teaching under the pseudonym Shoko Yamamura at her Tokyo Studio. She is also an accomplished modern dancer, shamisen player, and singer of traditional Japanese songs. Despite maintaining a home in Los Angeles, Hattori Mako currently resides in Japan, where she continues to pursue her passions and inspire those around her.
