Biography

Carl Vogt, later known as Louis Calhern, was born to a middle-class family in New York City, but his life took a dramatic turn when his family relocated to St. Louis during his childhood. It was during his teenage years in St. Louis that he was discovered by a representative of a touring acting troupe while playing football in high school, and he was subsequently hired as an actor.
