Lee Frost is widely regarded as one of the most talented and versatile filmmakers in the annals of exploitation cinema. Born on August 14, 1935, in Globe, Arizona, Frost grew up in Glendale, California, and Oahu, Hawaii, before eventually winding up in Hollywood, where he began his career making TV commercials for Telepics.
Frost made his film debut with the nudie cutie Surftide 77 in the early 1960s, and went on to make a slew of films in various genres, including tongue-in-cheek horror comedy, mondo shock documentaries, perverse softcore roughies, crime drama, westerns, and Nazisploitation. Many of his 1960s features were made for legendary trash flick producer Bob Cresse.
Frost also added sex inserts to foreign films such as London in the Raw, Night Women, and Witchcraft '70. Throughout the 1970s, he continued to produce entertainingly sleazy drive-in items, including Zero in and Scream, Chrome and Hot Leather, Chain Gang Women, The Thing with Two Heads, Policewomen, The Black Gestapo, Dixie Dynamite, and A Climax of Blue Power.
Frost often cast former football player Phil Hoover in his 1970s movies, and frequently collaborated with producer/screenwriter Wes Bishop. Both Frost and Bishop also appeared as actors in small parts in Frost's films. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Frost worked as an editor on industrial movies for a film laboratory.
Lee Frost's last feature film was the straight-to-video Shannon Whirry erotic thriller Private Obsession in 1995. He died at the age of 71 on May 25, 2007.
