Biography

L. Philippe Casseus is a first-generation Haitian-American born into a culturally diverse family in Brooklyn, New York, with a rich artistic heritage that spans multiple generations.

As the descendant of renowned musician Frantz Casseus, who toured globally with the acclaimed Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia, Philippe was introduced to the world of music and performance at a young age. In fact, Segovia is said to have named Frantz Casseus the father of the Calypso music genre.

Philippe's mother, Joestte Casseus, was a dedicated career clerical worker who later pursued her dream of becoming a special needs children's teacher in her later years. His estranged father, Roland Menuau, is a novelist, social issue speaker, and Haitian activist.

Music and singing played a significant role in the Casseus household, and by the time Philippe reached high school, he had become the frontman for multiple rock bands, writing his own music and touring locally. During this period, he also developed a passion for acting, participating in school plays such as WEST SIDE STORY and GREASE.

As he entered college, Philippe's focus shifted towards a career in entertainment, with a focus on writing and directing. He studied writing at Manhattan City College and lighting technique at the Center for Media Arts in New York.

After gaining experience in music videos, commercials, and independent films as a Key Grip, Philippe landed a spot as a music video director at Partizan Entertainment (Michel Gondry Co) and soon began writing and directing short films. He also joined family members at the ground level to help build the foundation of the HOLLYSHORTS FILMFESTIVAL, serving as a hands-on contributor and submissions judge.

Now in its 15th year, HSFF is one of only a handful of Academy Award qualifying short films programs, and Philippe remains active as a submissions judge and contributor.

The big break came when Philippe's action screenplay, FREELANCERS, was produced, starring ROBERT DENIRO, FOREST WHITAKER, and CURTIS "50" JACKSON. Today, Philippe is based in Los Angeles, where he continues to write, produce, and direct.
