Biography

Koji Yakusho is a renowned Japanese actor, celebrated for his captivating performances in a diverse range of films, including Tampopo, Unagi, and Babel. Internationally, he is perhaps best recognized for his starring role in Shall We Dance, which, at the time of its release, was Asia's most successful film export.

Born Koji Hashimoto in the southern city of Nagasaki, he later relocated to Tokyo, where he drew inspiration from his alias, borrowed from his work in the city's municipality. The name Yakusho translates to "government office," reflecting his early career in public service.

During his time at acting school, Koji met his future wife, actress Saeko Kawatsu, whom he married in 1982. He began his acting career with stage roles, before transitioning to television, landing a spot on Japan's national broadcaster NHK in 1983.

Koji's breakthrough performance came with a mostly silent role in the avant-garde food drama Tampopo, which marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration with director Kurosawa Kiyoshi. He has since received numerous accolades, including multiple Best Actor Awards at the Japanese Academy Awards, as well as nominations for other prestigious awards.

In addition to his acting work, Koji has also ventured into directing, helming the film Gaman No Abura in 2009. In 2023, he received the Best Actor award at the 76th Cannes Film Festival for his lead role in Wim Wenders' Perfect Days.
