A few years ago, a 16-year-old singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, KALI, began writing and recording her unique brand of captivating, catchy indie-rock songs, eventually assembling her first band, Big Wednesday. Their relatable and honest indie-surf arrangements drew enthusiastic, teenage crowds to prominent Los Angeles venues, including The Smell and The Viper Room, where sweaty, packed crowds would gather to experience their energetic performances.
As KALI grew older, she began to have experiences that were more emotionally charged and personal, and songwriting evolved from a fun hobby to a necessary outlet for her emotions. This transformative process led to the creation of her solo project, KALI, which would become a reflection of her innermost thoughts and feelings.
KALI's songs are characterized by their boundless creativity, magical quality, and honesty. They feature dramatic loops and meditative open spaces, crafting emotionally complex environments with entrancing repetitions and moments of sonic simplicity. Her vocal melodies, both intricate and vast, seem to float above a blend of alternative rock sounds, drawing from genres such as shoegaze, psychedelic rock, and dream pop.
