John Sutton, a British national by parentage, was born on October 22, 1908, in Rawalpindi, India, which is now part of Pakistan. After completing his education at Wellington College, Sutton spent around a decade working in various British colonies across Africa, including several roles as a hunter, rancher, and tea plantation manager. This period was marked by his sense of adventure, reminiscent of Errol Flynn, with whom he later collaborated on The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Sutton's thirst for exploration led him to reside in various parts of the world, including China, Malaya, and the Philippines.
