Biography

Jim Backus, born James Gilmore Backus on February 25, 1913, in Cleveland, Ohio, was a multi-talented actor who excelled in various mediums, including radio, Broadway, movies, television, and cartoons. After attending preparatory school in his hometown, Backus enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Art to hone his craft. While waiting for parts, he did radio work and befriended notable figures such as Garson Kanin and Keenan Wynn.

Backus persisted and soon found success in motion pictures, often typecast in roles as "rich types." However, he broke the mold by portraying James Dean's father in the iconic film Rebel Without a Cause (1955). As his career flourished, Backus took on two roles that would cement his legacy: Mr. Magoo in cartoons and Thurston Howell III in Gilligan's Island (1964).

Following the series' conclusion, Backus continued to appear in guest roles on television and in films before passing away on July 3, 1989.
