Jillian Lauren's biography:
Jillian Lauren grew up in suburban New Jersey, where she later fled to New York City. She attended New York University for a brief three minutes before dropping out to pursue a career in downtown theater. Lauren performed with renowned companies such as Richard Foreman's Ontological Hysteric Theater.
Her memoir, Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, was published by Plume in 2010 and became a New York Times bestseller. The book has since been translated into fourteen different languages. Lauren's novel, Pretty, is set to be released on August 30, 2011.
Lauren holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University and has had her writing featured in various publications, including The Paris Review, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Flaunt Magazine, and more. She has performed at spoken word and storytelling events across the country and has been interviewed on television programs such as The View, Good Morning America, and Howard Stern.
As a performer, Lauren has worked with a diverse range of directors, including Robert Cucuzza, Steve Balderson, Lynne Breedlove, Austin Young, Michelle Carr, and Margaret Cho. She was a featured dancer with the infamous Velvet Hammer Burlesque.
Lauren recently premiered her solo performance piece, Mother Tongue, at The Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles. She regularly blogs at Today Moms, The Nest, and Jillianlauren.com.
Lauren is married to musician Scott Shriner and they reside in Los Angeles with their son.
