Jayro Bustamante, a talented film director, was born in Guatemala and went on to study Film Directing at the prestigious Conservatoire Libre du Cinema Francais in Paris, France. He further honed his skills in screenwriting at the renowned Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, Italy.
After completing his studies, Bustamante returned to his native Guatemala in 2009 and founded La Casa de Produccion, a production company that would go on to produce a string of critically acclaimed films. His debut feature, Ixcanul, premiered at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival and won the coveted Silver Bear award, as well as over 60 awards at international film festivals.
Bustamante's subsequent films, Tremors and La Llorona, continued to garner international recognition, with La Llorona winning the Best Director award at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and receiving numerous other accolades. His latest film, La Llorona, was nominated for several prestigious awards, including the Golden Globes and Goya Awards, and won five awards at the Platino Awards.
In addition to his work as a director and producer, Bustamante has also served as a juror at several prominent film festivals, including the Berlinale, Brussels Film Festival, and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. He has been recognized for his contributions to the film industry, serving as President of the Jury for Horizontes Latinos at the San Sebastiaan 2020 Festival and the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, 2021.
Throughout his career, Bustamante has demonstrated a commitment to showcasing the rich cultural heritage and diverse perspectives of Guatemala and Latin America, earning him a reputation as one of the most innovative and respected filmmakers in the region.
