Jason Sussberg is a documentary filmmaker with a focus on science, based in the Bay Area. Like the renowned singer-songwriter Phil Ochs, he is a union member, specifically belonging to the Writers Guild of America. However, instead of possessing a melodious voice, he is equipped with a microphone, skillfully capturing the essence of our contemporary world. Throughout his illustrious career, Sussberg has produced and directed several theatrical documentaries that have been broadcast on PBS and streamed on various platforms, including Netflix, Apple TV, and Amazon.
His notable works include "The Immortalists" (2014),"Bill Nye: Science Guy" (2017),and "We Are As Gods" (2021). Additionally, he has written and directed episodes for the esteemed PBS series NOVA, specifically "Your Brain: Who's in Control?" (Season 50) and "Secrets in Your Data" (Season 51). Sussberg's most recent project is the film trilogy "Matter of Mind" (2023-2025),which he wrote and produced for PBS's Independent Lens.
Born and raised in Grass Valley, California, Sussberg now resides in the Bay Area. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Film & Digital Media from the University of California, Santa Cruz ('04) and a Master's degree in Documentary Film from Stanford University. Prior to his career in documentary filmmaking, Sussberg worked as a producer/editor for the San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors from 2005-2008, utilizing his preferred medium: the Jumbotron.
