Biography

Jacques Duby, a French actor born in Toulouse in 1922, was initially hindered by his shyness, which he overcame with the help of elocution lessons, ultimately discovering his passion for the stage. After completing his high school education, Duby embarked on a long and distinguished career spanning five decades, primarily focused on theater, but also including television and film. He was trained at the Conservatoire de Toulouse, Centre du Spectacle, and Conservatoire de Paris, and went on to perform in numerous stage roles, including plays by Marcel Aymé, Marcel Achard, Jacques Audiberti, Christine Arnothy, and Félicien Marceau.

Despite his youthful appearance, even in his eighties, Duby developed a reputation for playing naive, fragile, and dreamy characters, but he also demonstrated his versatility by taking on shabby, mean, and despicable roles. He appeared in a range of films and television productions, including Marcel Carné's "Thérèse Raquin" and Julien Duvivier's "Boulevard". Duby was a workaholic, often shooting films during the day and performing on stage at night.

Throughout his career, Duby has been devoted to his craft, prioritizing his passion for acting over other aspects of the industry. Although he had a promising start in the 1950s, with notable roles in films by Carné, Cayatte, Decoin, and Duvivier, his appearances in cinema became less frequent, limited to supporting roles in less notable works. Despite this, Duby remains a respected figure in the French theater and television world, and his dedication to his craft is a testament to his enduring passion for acting.
