Biography

Patrick John McNamara, a native of New Orleans, was known professionally as 'J. Patrick' to avoid confusion with another Actor's Equity member. Born with a passion for public speaking, McNamara initially pursued this interest through plays at the University of New Orleans, initially intending to improve his skills for a future career in law.

However, his experience on stage was so enjoyable that he decided to forgo law school and instead pursue a degree in theater studies at the University of New Orleans. After completing his degree, McNamara performed on stage at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and later honed his skills at Wayne State University in Detroit.

He then secured a job teaching voice at the National Academy of Drama, Carnegie Hall, before resuming his acting career at an avant-garde Off-Broadway club in Manhattan's East Village, where he spent the next three years. Following this, McNamara taught drama classes at Antioch College in Ohio and spent time in Europe before returning to his hometown of New Orleans.

In New Orleans, McNamara operated a theatrical company from 1974 to 1977, but unfortunately, the venture proved unprofitable and was short-lived. He then turned his attention to screen work, joining Actor's Equity and accumulating a significant number of film and television credits, including roles in two films directed by Steven Spielberg, as well as appearances in Dallas and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Throughout his career, McNamara was frequently cast as professors, doctors, psychologists, or senior executives, and continued to work in the industry until his retirement in 2016.
