Born in Kinko-cho, Asakuchi-gun, Okayama Prefecture, Japan, Hideo Nakata is a renowned Japanese film director, best known for his work on Japanese horror films such as Ring, Ring 2, and Dark Water. His films have been remade in English, including The Ring, Dark Water, and The Ring Two, which he also directed.
Nakata graduated from Kinko Gakuen High School and later attended the University of Tokyo, where he studied Asian Studies and was influenced by Shigehiko Hasumi's film seminar. He began his career as an assistant director on films such as "Allusion Reincarnation Tan" and corporate public relations films.
In 1985, Nakata joined Nikkatsu Studios and soon after, he worked as an assistant director on several films, including Be-Bop High School and Love Story for You. He made his directorial debut in 1992 with Curse, Death & Spirit and continued to work as an assistant director until 1995, when he directed "Diary of a Female Teacher: Forbidden Sex".
Nakata's breakthrough film, Ring, was released in 1998 and became a huge success, cementing his status as a leading figure in Japanese horror. He went on to direct several more films, including Ring 2, Dark Water, and The Last Scene, for which he won the Art Encouragement Prize for New Talent in 2003.
