Born and raised in New York City, she was raised with a passion for acting. She graduated with honors from the High School of Performing Arts and chose not to pursue acting in college, instead majoring in art history and literature at a small college in Europe. After graduating, she returned to New York City and later moved to Chicago, where she became a part of the city's budding theatre community.
She joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and won four Joseph Jefferson awards for best supporting actress. She then moved back to New York City, where she received a Theatre World Award for best newcomer and appeared in several productions, including "Extremities" with Susan Sarandon.
She went on to star in several films, including "Nadine", "Making Mr. Right", "Paperhouse", "Lonesome Dove", "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", and "Dick Tracy". She also appeared in several television shows, including "ER" and "Monk", and had a recurring part on the sitcom "Encore! Encore!".
She has also appeared in several stage productions, including "On Golden Pond" and "Balm in Gilead". She has received two Emmy nominations for her work, one for "Bastard Out of Carolina" and another for "Lonesome Dove".
