Before embarking on a career in the entertainment industry, Cavender served as a soldier of fortune, participating in various conflicts, including the Boer War, the Cuban War, and the Philippine War.

During the Boxer Rebellion in China, he demonstrated remarkable bravery, earning the prestigious Medal of the French Legion of Honor for his actions. The French officer leading the combined forces of French and American troops was fatally wounded during the storming of Tsin Tsin, and Cavender took his place, showcasing his leadership skills.

Cavender's extensive military experience proved invaluable in his future endeavors, particularly in his portrayal of Pancho Villa in a comedy film. He credited his military background for helping him bring authenticity to the role.

In his personal life, Cavender was married to Hazel Chene.
