Gerhard Johannes Alexander Tichy Wondzinski, professionally known as Gérard Tichy, was a renowned character actor in Spanish genre, horror, and exploitation cinema, born in 1920 in Weißenfels, Germany.
During World War II, Tichy served as a Lieutenant in the German Army and was captured, imprisoned in an Allied-occupied France POW camp, but he managed to escape and fled to neutral Spain, where he decided to remain after the war ended.
Tichy began his film career in the war epic Balarrasa (1951) and swiftly became a prominent character actor in Spanish cinema, appearing in over 100 films throughout his career.
He was a versatile actor, appearing in numerous spaghetti Westerns, notably Sergio Corbucci's Compañeros (1970),and international productions filmed in Spain, including King of Kings (1961) as Joseph, El Cid (1961) as King Ramirez, and Doctor Zhivago (1965) as partisan commander Liberius.
Despite not being a fluent English speaker, Tichy was capable in the language and effectively conveyed his performances in various international productions.
