George Foreman, the formidable boxer, dominated the ring from 1973 to 1974, boasting an unbeaten streak of 40 consecutive fights, with 37 victories coming by way of knockout. This remarkable run included a 24-fight knockout streak, which was interrupted when he faced the legendary Muhammad Ali on October 30, 1974, in Zaire, Africa, to defend his world heavyweight title.
Born into a troubled family, Foreman's life was marked by a history of run-ins with the law. However, he credits the Job Corps with turning his life around. Foreman's early days in boxing were spent as an amateur, where he captured a gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games, losing only two out of 24 fights. He turned pro under the guidance of veteran trainer Dick Saddler, alongside notable stablemates Charles "Sonny" Liston and Charlie Snips.
Foreman idolized Liston and emulated his ring style and mannerisms, earning a reputation for his intimidating stare. Although he was criticized for beating lesser opponents, he had previously defeated credible fighters like George Chuvallo, Boone Kirkman, and Gregorio Peralta.
Foreman's most notable victories included a two-round destruction of the previously undefeated Joe Frazier to capture the world title in 1973, as well as wins over Jose "King" Roman and Ken Norton to retain his title. However, he was ultimately knocked out by Muhammad Ali in eight rounds.
In 1975, Foreman participated in an exhibition match, fighting five men in one night, before embarking on a comeback trail that saw him win five straight knockouts. This momentum was short-lived, as he was defeated by Jimmy Young in Puerto Rico in 1977. Foreman claimed to have seen God in his dressing room following the defeat and announced his intention to become a preacher and retire from boxing.
Ten years later, Foreman returned to the ring to raise funds for his church, despite being told by experts that he would not succeed. He went on to rack up 18 consecutive knockout victories, before being defeated in a title bid by Evander Holyfield. However, Foreman stunned the world by knocking out undefeated World Heavyweight Champion Michael Moorer (36-0) to become champion again at the age of 45. He made a few successful defenses before losing his title to Shannon Briggs in a controversial decision.
