George Bancroft was born and raised in Philadelphia, attending high school at Tomes Institute. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating as a commissioned officer. After serving his required period of service, he turned to show business, initially as a theater manager, before transitioning to acting.
